Best Oils For Staining Bamboo Floors

Staining wood floors has long been a project that has been undertaken by individuals and professionals the world over; the same is true for those with bamboo floors.

Fortunately, there are tons of brands with products to meet all of your staining needs. However, if you’ve ever walked through the wood staining section of your local hardware or big box store, you were probably left with more questions than answers.

We understand that information related to staining bamboo floors is readily available, but there isn’t always relevant information related to the best brands that produce the oils that are meant for staining your wood floors; that’s where we come in!

We’ve done all of the research to come up with our three recommendations for brands that produce oil-based stains that are the best for your bamboo floors. Our hope is that, by the end of this article, you feel confident about moving forward with your bamboo staining project.

Our Top Choice

Minwax’s Seemingly Endless Supply of Wood Stains

Why we chose it: With a history that rivals that of many reputable American brands, Minwax stands out as a company which has been producing consistently top-quality products since the early 1900s. They’ve certainly been able to iterate and improve their product to the point where you would be hard pressed to find a better set of options.

What we love most about Minwax is the valuable information related to their stains that they have readily available on their site. They’ve also expanded their portfolio to offer nearly every stain hue and color that one could want.

In general, Minwax does a great job of consumer education; this means that whether you’re a novice or an experienced professional, they’ve made it a point to offer information that is easy to understand for the spectrum of consumers that shop for their products.

As we’ve stated in our article related to staining bamboo floors, there may be multiple reasons related to why you’re choosing to stain your floors, and Mixwax has multiple options to fit your needs. Here are a few of the different types of stain that they offer:

  • Oil-based
  • Water-based
  • Gel stain
  • A number of proprietary products, including PolyShades®, and their design series

While all of these are not oils, we thought we would offer a glimpse at just how much this company offers in terms of the pure breadth of their portfolio.

One innovative product that the company offers that we feel stands out is their wood finishing cloth. The cloths are pre-moistened and only require that you sand and clean your floors before use. (If you need recommendations on the best cleaning products for bamboo floors, you can find our “Best Of” list here.

With a long history of success and top-quality products, you are sure to find everything you’re looking for in a staining product with Minwax.

You can find all of Minwax’s product line at many of the largest big box chains, including Lowe’s and Walmart. You can also purchase their products online at Amazon.

Runner Up

Verathane’s Outstanding Line of Wood Floor Stains

Why we chose it: This Rust-Oleum brand of wood stains (a respected brand in its own right) is a great option for those looking for an alternative when it comes to oil-based stains.

Widely available and conveniently priced, this brand, which was founded in 1958, offers a lineup of oil-based stains that fit just about every job. They also offer a number of products that are meant for more specialty/niche projects.

One downside that caused Verathane to be listed as the runner up is the lack of useful information the company offers when compared to its competitors. While they do a great job of offering tips and showing examples of their products in use, we feel like they are lacking when it comes to relevant and simple information for their individual products.

Overall, though, Verathane has a great reputation for providing products that stand the test of time. We’re big fans of the Poly + Stain products, which offer the wood stain and polyurethane in one application.

The bulk of their expansive product line is available at stores like The Home Depot, and also available on Amazon via the Rust-Oleum brand.

Best Eco-Friendly Option

The Real Milk Paint Co.’s “Green” Oil Options

Why we chose it: Unlike our first two recommendations, this brand may not be one that you’re familiar or see readily available at many big box retailers, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of their products. A true blue-collar company that is located in Tennessee, The Real Milk Paint Co.’s focus is on producing products made from natural ingredients.

What we love most is that this is still a small, family-owned business. While the company’s history started with the founder refinishing old antique pieces, they now offer oils that can be used for wood floor finishing.

Our favorite product is their tung oil (also called Chinawood Oil), which is a natural oil produced by tung trees (these trees are native to China). It is a drying oil that looks great on wood floors and has the customer reviews to back it up. They also offer an appealing dark version of the tung oil, which uses a non-toxic product for darkening the oil.

Ultimately, we’re impressed by their brand, their story, and their great product offering. For those interested in an eco-friendly option (like those looking for the best eco-friendly bamboo floors), we suggest you take a look at Real Milk Paint. Their products are available both on their own website and on Amazon.
